Doggett to Run in District 25

Credit Photo by KUT News

Longtime U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, has decided to run for reelection in Texas's 25th Congressional District.

That's the district he represents now, but the boundaries were dramatically shifted by the 2011 Texas Legislature to favor a Republican candidate.

The lines were altered again by a three-judge federal panel late last month. Then the U.S. Supreme Court stayed use of those maps, pending a hearing before the high court January 9.

AG Lets Committee Rule on Bikes at the State Cemetery

Authorities at the Texas State Cemetery have become increasingly concerned with bicycles that stray off the paved roadway and onto walking paths or across grave sites. So much so that the cemetery's governing committee asked Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott whether they had the authority to put the kibosh to bikes at the historic site in East Austin.

Officials saw an upswing in bike traffic through the cemetery after road construction started along E. 7th Street and cyclists reportedly started cutting through the cemetery to avoid it.

Fewer Execution, Death Sentences in Texas

Credit Photo by Caleb Bryant Miller/KUT News

The state of Texas executed 13 people in 2011. A report issued by the Austin-based Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty this morning says that’s the fewest since 1996 and well below the record of 40 executions set in 2000.

Kristin Houlé is the coalition’s executive director. She says one reason for the decreased number of executions is that five death row inmates received stays of execution this year.

Supreme Court Sets Redistricting Hearing

UPDATE 8:45 p.m.:  Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is asking a three-judge federal panel in San Antonio to stay the deadline for candidates to file for primary elections in the state House and Senate, as well as Texas's 36 congressional seats. The deadline is Thursday, but last week's ruling by the Supreme Court that putting redistricting maps for the state's legislative and congressional districts on hold until the justices can review them rendered that essentially moot. The high court won't hear oral arguments on that case until January 9.

Clock Ticking on Austin F1 Race

A Formula 1 auto race in Austin next year seems increasingly unlikely.

The Associated Press quotes F1 president Bernie Ecclestone as saying organizers of the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin don't have the money to stage the race set for November 18, 2012. Race organizers have until November 27 to show they have enough money, or the race will be scratched from the 2012 schedule.

Track president Steve Sexton released a statement via email this afternoon, saying a delay wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
