Two Austin public art projects were named among the nation's 50 best in Americans for the Arts’ 2012 Public Art Year in Review.

James Edward Talbot’s “Your Essential Magnificence” on South Congress, and Chris Levack’s “Trilobite Shade” and “Iron Wave” for the Austin BMX and Skate Park at House Park were selected from hundreds of entries across the country.

Americans for the Arts announced its selected projects at their annual convention in San Antonio earlier this month.

When is a wall more than a wall?

A presentation on an outdoor wall this morning turned into a broader discussion of the emerging Seaholm District downtown this morning.

Boston-based design firm NADAAA delivered a briefing to the Austin City Council this morning regarding their proposals for a wall near the Seaholm Power Plant – the iconic, Art Deco-style building along west Cesar Chavez slated for redevelopment.  The wall, an Art in Public Places project, is meant to obscure electrical devices at an electrical substation in the heart of the Seaholm district.

If you had to pick 100 iconic individuals, who would you choose?

The City of Austin says it will pay up to $166,000 in costs and labor for someone to create a piece of “exterior art that is engaging for families and children” near a bridge that will become part of the Seaholm District redevelopment project.

The bridge, as you can see in the image above, will link Shoal Creek Trail to West Avenue via Second Street. The City of Austin’s Art in Public Places Project, which has been doing this kind of thing since 1985, says applicants should focus on meeting these criteria:

Artists have an extra seven days to get their act together and write a proposal to create public art at the new the African-American Cultural & Heritage Facility. The building will be constructed at 912 East 11th Street near Branch Street.

The City of Austin is accepting proposals from artists interested in creating public art at the future African-American Culture and Heritage Facility.  The complex will be located on East 11th Street off of Branch Street.
