Fort Hood Civilian Workers to Feel Effects of Sequester

Across-the-board federal budget cuts known as sequestration are about to have more effects in Central Texas.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Tuesday that his department has cut all it can on the military side and that any more would affect readiness, so Hagel says the time has come for civilian defense department workers to take unpaid days off: mandatory furloughs.

Killeen, Fort Hood Brace for Cutbacks

The automatic federal spending cuts set to take effect tomorrow could have a big impact on Texas. Specifically, cuts to army bases could cost the state’s economy nearly $2.5 billion.

For many people in Killeen, next to Fort Hood, the spending cuts are just abstract numbers. For Cheryl Eliano, president of the Fort Hood branch of the American Federation of Government Employees, they’re all too real.

The daughter of a man killed in the Fort Hood shooting rampage is now friends with the cousin of the accused shooter.

Kerry Cahill lost her father Michael Cahill at Fort Hood in 2009. Now, she's working with Nader Hasan, cousin of alleged shooter Nidal Hasan the alleged shooter, on Nader's effort to speak out against extremism through his organization, the Nawal Foundation.

Fort Hood Community Reacts to Expansion of Same-Sex Benefits

The Pentagon says it will extend some benefits to same-sex domestic partners of military servicemembers. This comes a year and a half after the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy.

Outside the visitor’s center at Fort Hood, men and women in camouflage stream into the building, paperwork in hand. Paul Eagen, of nearby Copperas Cove, spent ten years working at Fort Hood.
