The Lead: UT Opposes Campus Carry, TxDOT’s Toll Waiver

Good morning. The National Weather Service says Austin’s in for a sunny and mild day, with highs in the upper 70s.

Lead Story: The head of the University of Texas System is reiterating his opposition to allowing concealed firearms on college campuses.

Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa sent a letter to Gov. Rick Perry yesterday saying more guns on campus would likely increase the risk of injury or death, rather than increase safety.

SXSW: A 71-Year-Old Guitarist Makes A Belated Debut

This week, about 2,000 bands from around the world are performing at various venues throughout Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest music festival. Many of the musicians are young and have had plenty of experience performing in public.

And then there's guitarist Harry Taussig, who is nearly 72 years old. On Thursday, he'll be performing live for the first time ever.

Over SXSW, 'Street Treats' Snack Carts Put Homeless to Work

Can homeless people pedal their way into a home? An Austin nonprofit certainly hopes so. 

It also hopes to capitalize on the large crowds drawn to town for South by Southwest. So, during the festival, the nonprofit Mobile Loaves and Fishes equipped a group of homeless people with foot-powered snack-vending carts and uniforms. The new business is called Street Treats, and the vendors get to keep the profits.

First Welcome to SXSW Visitors? Austin's Compost Fire Stench

Austin Water is still working with the fire department to extinguish an ongoing compost fire at the Hornsby Bend Biosolids Plant.

The fire started at the waste management facility more than two weeks ago, on Monday, Feb. 25. While water utility officials have seen a reduction of smoke from the smoldering heaps – especially with help from a rainy weekend – the surrounding area still smells.
